History of Buteyko Breathing

The Buteyko Breathing Method was developed by Konstantin Buteyko, a Ukrainian doctor in the 1950’s. Doctor Buteyko discovered that overbreathing or hyperventilation was at the root of many diseases, especially diseases of the respiratory system such as Asthma.

How does it work?

When we breathe too much the level of Carbon Dioxide in our body drops. CO2 is not just a waste gas in the human body. It plays a vital role in the release of oxygen to the cells. Oxygen is carried in the blood by Haemoglobin. Our blood is saturated with 95 to 99 per cent Oxygen. The key to health is the correct release of Oxygen from the Haemoglobin. It is in the presence of CO2 that the Oxygen is released to our cells. (This is known as the Bohr Effect and was discovered by Christian Bohr in 1903.)

Normal breathing volume for a person at rest is 5 to 6 litres per minute. A person with Asthma typically breathes 10 to 15 litres of air per minute. Doctor Buteyko helped thousands of Asthmatics to reverse their asthma by learning to breathe less.

Breathe and meet the needs of your body

A lowered level of CO2 means a reduction in the Oxygen release to every cell in our bodies. Through practising the exercises in The Buteyko Breathing Method you will learn to breathe efficiently, with correct volumes to meet the needs of your body. You will learn how to bring your body into balance by re-establishing a healthy Oxygen release within your body. The Buteyko Breathing Method can greatly improve the quality of sleep, boost energy levels and empower you to take control of your own health by learning to control your breath.
